ABOUT MAKING IN TRANSIT

Making in Transit is an exhibition of works created by artist Jennifer Crouch in response to her voyage to the remote archipelago of Svalbard as member of the Arctic Circle Residency, Autumn expedition, 2016. Making in Transit is an exploration of mapping, navigation and our relationships to land and sea. It contemplates the absurdity of the sublime - the feeling of insignificance amidst the sheer enormity of the Arctic landscape; the terror of a beautiful, relentless landscape which, resulting from our carelessness is increasingly vulnerable.

Making in Transit will host a series of free events which unpack many different subjects relating to making, mapping and how we respond to our environment. Our programme of events includes talks and creative workshops from artists, scientists and academics working in fields as varied as climate science, polar science, the anthropology of design, atmospheric physics, seafaring, policy making, artificial intelligence and ethics.
EXPLORING LAND AND SEA

By making use of the themes of land and sea we aim to unpack the cultural, material, philosophical, scientific and environmental implications ‘making’ or creating something in response to the environment. Making is investigated by the project on a range of scales: from a hand-carving drift wood; to built environments as large and complex as the cities in which we live.

Taking their title from Alfred Gel’s essay of called The Technology of Enchantment, these talks explore intuitive, manual modes of production and making. From production in studios, bespoke making of scientific instruments to model machine learning and artificial intelligence. The series will look at how different ‘cultures of production’ can relate to environment, cities, and the anthropology of art and design. Painting by Jennifer Crouch

Exploring communities, and the anthropology between land and sea; Interaction Exchange seminars will look at including trade, knowledge exchange, exploitation and power struggles. Ranging from ham radio and digital communities, to neural nets and language, the seminars will explore exchanges from within our anatomy to global communication. GET INVOLVED!
By bringing together a broad range of topics such as climate science, material science, physics, design, ceramics, polar ecosystems, drawing, map making, navigation, artificial intelligence, philosophy, biomedical sciences and neuroscience we hope to emphasis how complicated the issue of how we co-exist under the threat of climate change. We want to explore different ways of making through our workshops: experiment with different materials and meet artists who engage with materials in brilliant, innovative ways that make us think twice about concepts and materials that we take for granted.

We aim to encourage cross-disciplinary dialogue between experts from varied fields from medicine, to geochemistry and architecture in a safe, trustworthy and welcoming environment. All our events are free but you will need to book your place on Eventbrite, you can find out more on our program of events page. Find out about previous events we have run, and the work we have done so far on the Making in Transit blog .
