The Arctic Circle Residency

The Arctic Circle

The Arctic Circle Reidency happens twice a year and begins in Longyearbyen, Svalbard on the 30th of September 2016. The Arctic Circle website states the following about its mission: 'The Arctic Circle Residency is a nexus where art intersects science, architecture, education, and activism - an incubator for thought and experimentation for artists and innovators who seek out and foster areas of collaboration to engage with the central issues of our time'. via The Arctic Circle website.

The Arctic ship on which the residency takes place is called The Antigua and embarks on the 1st of October. You can follow where Making in Transit goes by visiting the Marine Traffic website.

Images of the preparations leading up to departure between the 27th of September and the 1st of October can be seen below. The Arctic Circle adventure can be read about on the blog with more details further down the page.

SAILING

The first thing you learn as sea, is that the wind decides when and where you go.
A barquentine ship is a sailing vessel with three or more masts; with a square rigged foremast (sail) and fore-and-aft rigged main (which means sails that are set along the line of the keel - in other words the length of the boat), mizzen (the third mast) and other masts. For the sake of comparison, a fully rigged ship is square-rigged on all three masts. Setting sails in good winds is a team effort, and the following maritime idioms have never felt so apt: ALL HANDS ON DECK, KNOW (LEARN) THE ROPES, TO TAKE THE WIND OUT OF SOMEONES SAILS, THE COAST IS CLEAR.

NAVIGATION

Navigation requires a focus on the process of monitoring and controlling the movement of a craft or vehicle from one place to another. This requires specialised knowledge, and skills that are necessary to carrying out navigational tasks. These involve observational activities, understanding how to interpret and react to changes in environment such as changes in the wind strength, current and ocean swells. Locating the vessels position compared to known locations or patterns is at the core of navigation practices which ultimately refers to any skill or study that involves the determination of position and direction such as longitude and latitude.

Time and 'Dead Reckoning' are essential to navigation. More detailed accounts of  techniques in navigation can be found on the blog under the tag called 'navigation'.

TRAVEL LOG

Below are a selection of images from the expedition landings - places visited from The Antigua where work was carried out on shore or on land. A detailed travel log of the journey the Antigua and it's crew undertook during the Arctic Circle 2016 Autumn residency can also be found. For more detailed accounts of each landing visit the blog and search under the tag 'The Arctic Circle'.
